Discography Series: Lana Del Rey #3
Honeymoon
Honeymoon: Interesting intro! It seems almost...scary in a way? I'm definitely intrigued. Not sure I'm a mega fan of this song so far with the minimal production. Lana sounds good though. Mostly bored by this song honestly. The 'scary' production coming back is a bit interesting. Definitely not a song for me. Okay, it got a bit better with the marching band type part. This is what I would have wanted more of. Unfortunately, it's a boring song that drags out too much for me. 5/10
Music To Watch Boys To: Okay, I'm behind this idea. Although whether I'm behind the song...we'll see. The vocal effects are fun with the distant and foreground vocals at the start. Also, is that like...a flute or something? This definitely feels like it has more of a song to it and I'll like it more. I actually like this a fair bit. It's a lowkey bop. She sounds good, the melody and production are greattt. The chorus is great with the contrast between the vocals. When Lana hits, she HITS. 8/10
Terrence Loves You: This one could maybe be a miss based on the start. It's a piano ballad type of song, and it functions okay at being that. But that also makes it not that interesting to me. I'm sure lyrically it means a lot more but I can never get into songs properly if I don't like the way they sound. And I'm not really here for the way this one sounds. 5/10
God Knows I Tried: Me talking about my life and what goes on it sometimes. The instrumental is just too sparse with just that guitar at the start. Sounds somewhat better with the extra elements and the echoey vocals. For some reason though, I think I like this somewhat? The way Lana is singing this song is...catchy. The light bit...maybe less of a fan of that. I really can't decide if I like this or not? On a relisten to it, I like it, except towards the end. But enough of the song is good to be a good song. 7/10
High By the Beach: Kinda sounds like a helicopter or something. Then fun distortions. Oh, and the beach sounds are fun! Okay, this did switch up a bit. For some reason here I'm not totally feeling the vocal effects with the production here, it feels like...discordant somehow? Maybe I like it? Do I? Maybe I do. 7/10
Freak: Oh my god, it's a track about me! Interesting grand opening. Makes me intrigued to see where the song goes. It's going in a good direction to start with, so that's a win for me. I like the production later, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of the layered and distant vocals there really. I think they make the song a bit discordant to me? They don't really match. Towards the end, just the vocals, absolutely not. A freak of a song, some may say! Definitely grated on me more the longer I listened to it. 5/10
Art Deco: Was that a cool transition? Love when they happen. It sounds like another intriguing song at the start. Okay, this may be the best track so far. Lana's voice sounds better here and fits the style of production well, which is also giving a lowkey bop. This is very much one of the Lana songs I could come back and listen to a lot, it's a great song. 8/10
Burnt Norton (Interlude): Interesting interlude. It's a good one. It sounds like one and it fits in well. Lana sounds interesting, and it gives a kinda mysterious, calming as well as hypnotic vibe. I very much like its place in the album too. This is how you do an album interlude. [No rating as it is an interlude].
Religion: I thought it sounded cute as a more stripped back acoustic track at the start. Surprisingly, while I don't mind where the song went, I'm not sure it's entirely what I would have liked. It still sounds decent though, definitely not a favourite though. Again, Lana sounds gooood. The song got more catchy as it went through. Liked the transition into the next song too! 7/10
Salvatore: A very pleasant song to listen to throughout. A good match of Lana's voice to good and interesting production. Definitely a song I could come back and listen to. Gets a lot more interesting towards the end as well. Not surprised that this is one of the most listened to tracks on the album according to Apple Music. 7/10
The Blackest Day: Depending on how that guitar goes, this could be awful or great for me. I think it leans more towards great, but I'd cool it good rather than great. It sounds like quite a good song actually. I think it actually leans more towards great as it progresses. It's a very good song. I like its general atmosphere. 8/10
24: Me when I'm a year younger than I actually am right now. Also, me when I'm the amount of hours in this day. This is another decent song, though I definitely like it less than the previous one. It again has a quite grand atmosphere to it with its production. Sort of old too? It showcases Lana's voice more here, which is great. 7/10
Swan Song: Dua Lipa marked SAFE. Not sure any song could surpass that Swan Song. This is another song that's quite grand and sweeping, and I like it for that. This is just a very nice song to listen to. Very soothing and relaxing. 7/10
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood: Not sure this one is my favourite honestly. It's not giving, the production is annoying. Especially whatever that dumb instrument is. It just sounds goofy. And this song just sounds bad and generally boring. 3/10
Overall Verdict: One thing I appreciate in Lana albums, including this one, is that she gives songs to breathe. It never feels like she's chasing a cheap 2 minute TikTok type song, but is telling a story with the lyrics and atmosphere of a song. For the most part, this album provided what I'd say are cool interesting songs. Lana sounded good in most of them, and although it isn't my typical style of music, I could really get into a fair few of the songs. A few of them were boring and bad, but for the most part, this was a good album, and I could mostly listen to it again.
