Sabrina Carpenter - Short and Sweet (Deluxe)
15 Minutes: Okay, maybe this is the one song per Sabrina album I like. Immediately it sounds like a bop and less like the flop slower songs from the album. This is a song I definitely like, and I will be returning to. It's going to make it into my list of favourite Sabrina Carpenter songs, which isn't hard because there's barely any I like. But I could see this being a good single to push honestly. It's a really good pop song. Sabrina's voice works well, it's interesting, it's a bop that makes you wanna shake your ass. The lyrics are fun too. Maybe the outro is the one let down, but it's honestly fine considering how good the song is. Do you know you have 15 minutes? 8/10
Please Please Please (feat. Dolly Parton): A song I didn't like on the standard album, so let's see how I like this version. Immediately, having the more country production makes it sound more interesting to me. Dolly Parton sounds *okay* by herself, maybe not the best. But the main thing that draws me to this version of the song is the updated production. It makes it sound WAY better! Maybe I'll be listening to Please Please Please now after all! I was thinking it was a bit cringe it was the clean version...but maybe not. Okay, reading everyone else's opinions and everyone thinks it's a disaster? Am I okay in the head? Maybe Dolly sounds...not the best in places, sure. But the song sounds way better to me in this version. 7/10
Couldn't Make It Any Harder: *gay snigger* Anyway, this is a slower moment, and in traditional Sabrina fashion, it's boring. I know I couldn't like too many Sabrina songs, I may have to have a health test when that happens. It's fine? To be fair, it does get more interesting into the second half of the song with the more intense production and singing. 6/10
Busy Woman: At the start, I was like...this is going to suck. And it doesn't suck, but I thought it was going to be better than it was. There are elements of it I like, but it feels like it lost the momentum it had to me. I feel like it should be bigger and have bigger production for what it is. At the minute, it misses out on being a bop. The final chorus gets that more, but it's missed in enough of the song that it doesn't quite get into good song territory. 6/10
Bad Reviews: Another more country or acoustic moment. I fear it's going to be boring yet again... From what I remember of listening to the album, it's not really that different from some of the non-singles on the standard album. Anyway, it's not bad, but meh. 5/10
Alessia Cara - Love & Hyperbole:
Go Outside!: Touch grass! I will NOT be doing so Alessia sorry. This song doesn't really make me want to touch grass sadly. I feel, like the message of the song, I can't go outside after listening to it. Rimshot mention? Okay! 6/10
Left Alone: This song feels slightly better. Anyway. it mostly passed me by so I don't really have many thoughts. Maybe this album was better left alone! 6/10
Dead Man: Wait, is this the same song? It sounds very similar... Ayway, I feel like this record so far is just...missing something. It's okay sounding but it's just...not quite there. Cool little breakdown in this song though! 6/10
Subside: The song starts off as almost being nothing, and that bit was...nothing. But thankfully it kicks in more a bit later. That part of the song onwards is definitely better. Anyway, my interest is subsiding listening to this (aren't I funny?). I have a feeling this whole album is going to be 6/10 territory, where it's fine, but nothing really exciting or special. Also, this song maybe goes on slightly too long? 6/10
Run Run: 6 [Insert joke about me running away from this album here]. It's just...a bit boring? But okay? 6/10
Drive: Thankfully it didn't just turn out to be yet another Mandatory Ballad situation. Maybe I'm actually enjoying this song slightly more than the others? It feels more catchy for me. It's not really a 'bop' as such but it's getting more towards it. 7/10
Get To You: It was somewhat boring and became more interesting again. But not interesting enough sadly. Is it nearly over yet? To be fair, the more interesting parts are definitely sounding good. But I just don't think it's enough of the song for it to be good. If it were more like the better parts of the song, we'd be talking. 6/10
Isn't It Obvious: I just feel like too many of these song titles set me up for cringe jokes about me not liking them. But again it's just boring and fine I guess. I don't want to listen to it again. Please stop, begged Kieran. I can't take the outro going on for any longer than it did. 6/10
Garden (Interlude): I'm not really sure this is an interlude as such other than just being a shorter version of the songs on the album. It sounds pretty identical. It's a substantial enough interlude to qualify for a score so it gets the same 'fine but boring' score as every other song. 6/10
Nighttime Thing: Well, I guess it's slightly more interesting. But it's still distant from something good is the problem. Also, not the interlude being basically the same length as this song. 6/10
Feels Right: Carly Rae Jepsen made a better song by this name. It makes me want to listen to that one instead. It does NOT feel right. I realise I'm basically saying the same thing over and again but I'm actually finding little interesting about these songs. 6/10
Fire: Being on fire would at least be more interesting than this. I guess the last bit is slightly more interesting? 6/10
Slow Motion: To be fair, although these songs are all not amazing to me, this one again feels slightly more catchy. It's a nice change. 7/10
Clearly: Read basically any comment above and it's the same for this song. 6/10
Overall Verdict: Boring. That's basically it. I don't feel that this album had really anything interesting to it at all. A lot of the songs blended into each other. They weren't interesting, and they didn't hook me. I just kinda fazed out listening to it. A certified not for me album.
MILCK - Mother Tongue:
I'm In: I'm IN the MOTHER tongue. However, I am not yet seeing the MOTHERness. In this case, I did like the longer outro. I feel like it was maybe the best part of the song for me even though it has barely any words other than 'I'm in'. 6/10
Married in the Backyard: Oh no, I think I decided to listen to the wrong album again. Too bad I'm committed to finishing my listens. It's a cute little song, especially the contrast with the male vocals. Still boring though. 6/10
I Do: The intro made me think it could be a really interesting song. It definitely has more interesting production elements into the first verse. I think this could go somewhere good. And the chorus has wasted it somewhat. Not quite what I wanted sadly. It's definitely a more interesting and catchy song overall even if it isn't as good as it could have been. 7/10
Wonder Wonder: We love a bit of a vocoder moment. It's very rare I don't like it! It was not that much of a song to start with but it definitely got a lot more interesting as it progressed. But it's still not quite there as a good song too. I felt parts of the middle were good, and then it just wasn't again. 6/10
Power of the Heart: A more interesting song. It gives me country vibes to some degree? But still not really it. 6/10
Still a Fire: Another fire song, another flop. Just set me on fire already! It gets slightly more interesting later on, but ehhh, it's okay. 6/10
Mother Tongue: Wait, I only just realised that Mother Tongue is likely referring to a 'mother tongue' like a native language and not it being a MOTHER tongue. Oh dear. I think it's officially over for me. It's certainly not giving MOTHER really. 5/10
This Skin: Okay, it's probably the closest to a boppy bop. I certainly like it more than a lot of the other songs. Maybe the best song so far? 7/10
Suburbia Hungerstrike: This title wins the award for having me intrigued. It's one of the more unique ones. Interesting lyrics, it's a bit of a sad song to me. But I don't enjoy listening to it. 5/10
Safehouse: There's a feature on this song? I didn't notice for a lot of it. Their vocals sound together sound good but that's about all the praise I have for it. The message of the song is nice though. It's always nice to be safe in somebody's safehouse. 5/10
Morning Bird: This again simply passed me by. Nothing really to recommend from it. 5/10
Overall Verdict: I'm afraid it's another boring album to join the boring club. It's a fun club! I feel like a lot of people who know my music taste will take that as an endorsement they should listen to it though. It's definitely a singer/songwriter type of album and they can be hit and miss for me. It's mostly fairly stripped back and slower and not really for me.
Singles:
Kylie Minogue - last night i dreamt i fell in love: go away with the lower case titles. Immediately, it feels like a Kylie Minogue song. Nothing special, but promising! The chorus...is disappointing sadly. The production is more annoying than enjoyable. It's sad because the verses sound really good to me. Lyrically, it's not really saying anything new. I guess the bridge that is more speaking is alright? The outro with the la's is not really it either... 6/10
Addison Rae - High Fashion: Why does the single artwork involve feet? Get us out of your foot fetish please. However, immediately I'm intrigued! The production sounds VERY interesting. Addison Rae just...never misses. This feels like she's leaning more into the more experimental bag rather than Diet Pepsi and Aquamarine, which are fantastic pop songs but are more 'safe'. Some of the lyrics I'm finding a bit questionable...at the minute. The 'high fashion' hook doesn't really land for me especially either. But I'm so intrigued by the direction of this song, the production and where it takes the album. It does feel like the songs will be on a cohesive album. The distant vocals and the synths really work well together. I guess the lyrics and some parts of the song are where I'm a bit...???. But Addison never misses. Another hit once again. "Addison Rae, please stop" every other pop musician begged. "We won't have a career if you carry on." 8/10
Louise - Confession: Sometimes I feel like pop songs have come out of an AI, with the instructions to 'make a pop song'. I'm not saying this song is bad, and nor does every song have to be a reinvention of the wheel, but this is just another pop song. It definitely sounds decent! As a lead single for an album, I think it's not really hooking me unfortunately. I guess the fake out towards the end is sorta cool? I don't know, I don't really have much to say about it beyond that. 7/10
Perrie - Rollercoaster: Perrie's solo career so far has been a disaster. A complete lack of direction, it doesn't feel like she has an idea of the artist she wants to be. This is the latest attempt to get going. And yet again...I'm somewhat disappointed. The chorus is really underwhelming, and it almost doesn't feel like Perrie's soul is in what she's singing. The verses and pre-chorus do admittedly sound better, and it may be one of her better offerings for her. For someone who's supposedly on a rollercoaster of feelings, I don't really feel that. Maybe it's a rollercoaster for children? Anyway, she gets points for it being BETTER, but I feel like this would be a good album track. I'm not sure it's the song to launch her solo career off. 6/10
Lucy Dacus - Best Guess: It started somewhat interesting, but it's a somewhat boring, just there song for me. It's not bad though. My best guess is that I'll never listen to this song again. Fans of Lucy and boygenius and so on will probably like it though. 6/10
Bon Iver - Everything Is Peaceful Love: Do I expect to like Bon Iver songs? No. Did I like it? No. Is anyone surprised? No. I'm sure for people that like this kind of music it's good. If you think my music taste is bad, maybe that's a sign to listen to it! 5/10
Ayra Starr - All The Love: This song is not really for me, but it's fine. The production is fine enough, so are the lyrics, but nothing about it really encourages me to ever listen to it again. 5/10
Japanese Breakfast - Mega Circuit: I thought I heard incel in this song, that's fun! The song is...fine? It invokes almost nothing in me. Maybe I have a slight dislike to it? It does not feel like I was 'sucked off by the AC unit'. Anyway, it was certainly a song I listened to. Production, boring. Singing, boring. I guess the lyrics were a bit interesting? 4/10
Sam Smith - Love Is A Stillness: I hear a piano. This could be amazing or a disaster for me. Some of the lyrics are kinda...cringe. "You're like a rock in a rolling song". Okay? This song is also like...basically 30 seconds long (okay, it's slightly under 2 minutes). It has essentially nothing to it. And yet somehow it still went on too long. The whistling at the end is just...bad. At least Sam Smith sounds okay I guess? Their vocals...provided...something. Whatever it was, I don't know. Anyway, I fear this is not for me. 3/10
Tyla feat. Sean Paul - PUSH 2 START (REMIX): Tyla very rarely misses. Her debut album was great (there's more than just Water there!). Sean Paul...is, however, a miss. I just think his voice here doesn't really work well with Tyla or the song. I find when he has vocals on the song to be grating. Anyway, this remix was...okay? Tyla sounds good, it sounds interesting enough, but Sean Paul...meh. 6/10
Madison Rose - SHE'S THE ONE: She is the moment! Okay, OKAY, maybe this is going to EAT! I feel like the vocals are slightly disappointing me, but I really like the production. I know I criticised another song for unoriginality, and it's not like this production is original at all, but it at least sounds good to me! I think how the vocals sound is what lets it down, I get the effect on the vocals is intentional to make it sound a bit messy, but I just find it sounds less good. Anyway, decent enough song! 7/10
Selena Gomez feat. benny blanco - Scared Of Loving You: How cute and romantic. And also boring!! It really is just...boring. It's a cute sentiment I guess? I'm scared I'll fall asleep listening to it personally. He's also...fine on the track. Did anybody ask for this? I certainly didn't. 5/10
Raveena - Sun Don't Leave Me: This was a really nice listen, it's definitely a song I could see me listening to a lot more. It's a chiller song but it sounds great! Pet peeve though is studio chatter, a lot of the time we just don't need it. 7/10
Self Esteem - 69: Okay, we LOVE starting with "I can't focus on my dick getting sucked if I'm sucking someone else's dick". Iconic. Oh, and then the BEAT starts. Bop alert? And we're just rating sex positions, okay. I really quite like this. "If you beg, I will peg". She's really dissing 69. Iconic really. Yes, NO! YES, NO! YES, NO! I basically just love this song. It's a bop and the production really fits what the song is about. 8/10
